Show 54 - Unibroue Redux and Beer Drinking Songs

Join as we celebrate! Dick is celebrating finishing both the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon and the ING New York City Marathon. It's time to drink! We listen to some great drinking songs and encourage our listeners to provide their list of «favorite beer drinking songs» - whether the song is about drinking, or just one you always hear when you are drinking - go ahead and post it!

Show snacks are store bought chicken wings (fire and mustard) and fried chicken livers.

Unibroue beers we sampled on this show...

  • La Terrible
  • Chambly Noire
  • La Blanche de Chambly

Listen to this redux here.

You boys rock. Unibrou makes some mighty tasty brews. I love living on the West Coast where we can find their 2006 Edition in Trader Joes for 4.99 a bottle - compared to the 9.00 pricetag in BevMo. These beers all age wonderfully. I have several cases of theirs and they just mellow with age. So far the oldest I have is only two years old, but very nice.

I love drinking and drunken music. I have a list of songs on my iPod for drinking events. Here's a short list:

T*tties and Beer - Ronald Wainright ?
Old Number Seven - The Devil Makes Three
Two Shots of Happy - U2 (b-side song)
Beer Beer Beer - (Traditional Irish pub song)
Illinois Enema Bandit - Zappa
Small Change - Tom Waits
Gun Street Girl - Tom Waits
-The entire Tom Waits collection
Take Five - Dave Brubeck
Dog's Breakfast - Harpdog Brown
Redneck Tailgate Dream - Splitlip Rayfield
Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing - Chris Isaac
Bartender - Kary Noble
Wagon Wheel - Old Crow Medicine Show
Knockin' on Heaven's Door - Clapton
Famous Blue Raincoat - Leonard Cohen
Chelsea Hotel - Leonard Cohen
Hey Pretty - Poe
Woke Up This Morning - Alabama Three (NOT the Sopranos version, the acoustic)
Johnny Cash - Live in Folsom Prison Album
- additions -
James McMurtry singing Choctaw Bingo is a must when drinking to excess.
Walter Trout is great to watch while pounding beers.
Dave Alvin is pretty damned good too.

Oh, B-E-E-R-R-U-N was not a Garth Brooks song, it was basically stolen from Tod Snyder, a real musician and a real song writer. Not as pretty as GB, but if you like music you'll like him a whole lot more. If you haven't check Tod Snyder out, you should. Great live too.

T*tties and Beer was also a pretty funny comic act by Rodney Carrington (I put Wainwright earlier, but he's a great lecturer and never mentions t*tties). Zappa though is clearly the master in this category.

Great show... I was SHOCKED to hear that you got a bad bottle of Unibrou... Who wadda thunk it?

Loved the music history lessons... They never get old. Seriously... Its a great part of the shows.

As for drinking songs... Hmmmm, I am going to take a lot of time here, but let me name a few of my favorites (Stuff that CHUD & I sing to on TBR)

Drunk and in Love - Too Much Joy
I'm an adult now - The Pursuit of Happiness
Any song off of Frankencrist by The Dead Kennedy's
Baby's all liquored up - Country Dick Montana

Actually, anything by Country Dick Montana will pass as a drinking song!

Great show as always guys! I have to agree with Grouucho on the music history lessons, I love that! Groucho..I never figured you for a Dead Kennedy's fan, attaboy, my top drinking song when I want to get in the mood for an all out blitz would have to be Rhino Bucket's «bar time»

As always, it's a learning experience on Big Foamy Head. This time around, I learned that Terrible was not pronounced «Terrible». And it wasn't really all that terrible, from the sounds of things. Of course, tell Bubby this and you'll get a different story. I recall he drank a bottle and the next day his gas was so bad, every time he cut one his cat would lick it's ass. Wow, what a visual.

Congratulations to Dick on finishing his marathons. I ride a bike for a reason - I don't have the wind or the legs to run. The bike and the hills I ride in give me more than I can handle. I ran a 5K once and I thought my lungs were going to bust out of my chest. Way to go, Dick! I love how you called out Lance for being a big pussy too. He said he had a newfound respect for marathoners after running that race.

OK, in regards to beer drinking songs, I'm afraid the songs I'd list here would get me tossed out of the Beer Safari. I don't listen to rock or country. I'm an acid jazz freak. When I drink beer, I like to watch sports or a movie, or listen to some laid back R&B and stuff.

So . . .

• Theme to ESPN «Sportscenter»
• Anything by Miles Davis, John Coltrane, or Dave Brubeck

I'll leave it at that, gents. Awesome show. Sorry it took me so long to get caught up. Your stories took center stage to the beer, which is always refreshing.

Cheers,

Clarke

Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Dave Brubeck - out of this world good stuff Clarke! Glad you got a chance to catch the show. I know work has been sucking your energy lately. Oh, regarding pronunciation - we have no clue. Whatever sounds right at the time! The story about BuBBy's cat makes me laugh.
