The Lost Interviews - Mick interviews Rick

icon for podpress  Mick interviews Rick!! Good fun. [2:06m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download

The third of the lost interviews series. Mick interviews Rick.

Simply put, Mick is brilliant. He has one of the most sophisticated homebrew systems I've ever seen. It's computer controlled, SRC relayed, PID controlled, yada-yada. The guy can control his brew day while watching a football game upstairs. When Mick was bored being a EE he went to school to become a pharmacist. This guy is smart.

Rick is a multiple-mega-award-winning guru - and no slouch when it comes to technology. He is an entreprenuer, businessman, father, man-about-town. Multiple Golds, ribbons, awards and a Pro-Am brewer.

Give a mic to one, listen to the other... podcast GOLD! Here's the audio.... well, perhaps 2 minutes of audio. Alcohol was involved!

The second of our "Lost Interview" series. If you've been living under a rock, you may not know who Jamil is. He's a fixture on the Brewing Network and most homebrewers aspire to get to his level of brewing to style - he's won 2 Ninkasi www.bantuhealth.org/tadalafil-buy/ awards (2004 and 2007)! Coauthor of "Brewing Classic Styles" and more recently a collaboration with Chris White - "Yeast: The Practical Guide to Beer Fermentation"

This was a good interview! Hope you enjoy it.

Reports of our death have been greatly exaggerated. Okay, so nobody reported it, and like we really need a reason to drink some good beer! Dick, Rick, Mike and Chris explore new realms of beer deliciousness in this show.

  • Laughing Dog - Dogzilla

  • Weyerbacher - Simcoe Double IPA
  • Boulder Beer - Hazed and Infused
  • Founder's - Nemesis

Show 151 - Black and Proud (NSFW)

icon for podpress  BFH 151 - Black and Proud [77:00m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download

There is a new style brewing out there these days - Cascadian Dark Ale or Black IPA. It's big. It's dark. It's proud.

If you're at work - kill the audio when the exit song starts. It's not completely appropriate, but then again, it's not completely inappropriate either.

Dick starts his multipart report on Chess Records - Chicagos answer to STAX and SUN. Great blues history.

In Memoriam:

  • Alaskan Brewing Company - Double Black IPA
  • 21st Amendment - Back In Black
  • Twisted Pine - Hoppy Knight
  • Brew Dog - Bashah
  • Deschutes - Black Butte

The Big Foamy Head Book and Movie Club has a recommendation - "Cadillac Records".

Music Samplings:

  • James Brown - I'm Black and I'm Proud
  • Little Walter - Last Night
  • Rolling Stones featuring session player Jim Dickinson on piano - Wild Horses
  • Muddy Waters - Hoochie Coochie Man
  • NSFW! A**hole - written by Jim Dickinson, sung by Reba Russell at Memphis Arts and Heritage festival

Show 150 - The Highway 61 Beer Show

icon for podpress  The Highway 61 Beer Show [63:49m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download

150 Shows over 5 years... Woot! Confetti! Okay on to the show content.

In Memoriam:

  • Dragonmead - Final Absolution Belgian Style Trippel Ale
  • Rogue Ales - John John Juniper
  • Avery/Russian River Brewing Company - Collaboration Not Litigation Ale
  • Short's Brewing Company - Huma-Lupa-Liscious IPA

Liberally borrowing from Wikipedia, the source from which all knowledge flows - Highway 61 is often called "The Blues Highway," because of the course it takes from Minnesota, through Memphis, Tennessee, and into Louisiana (primarily New Orleans). The junction of Highway 61 and Highway 49 in Clarksdale is designated as the famous crossroads where, according to legend, Robert Johnson supposedly sold his soul to the Devil in exchange for mastery of the blues. A 30-mile (48 km) section of Highway 61 between Clarksdale and Tunica is the longest segment of highway in the world with no horizontal or vertical curves. It was on this stretch of highway that blues singer Bessie Smith died in a car accident on September 26, 1937.

American music producer John Hammond was apparently a rat bastard but he had a great ear for talent - for example Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Gratuitous self promotion and other topics of interest:

  • Big Foamy Head iApp and Twitter feeds are all the rage.
  • KROC World Brewers Forum at the Great American Beer Festival. Stop by the Marriot on Thursday night at the GABF. Grab a pint of Epiphany Brewings "Bitter American"
  • Beer Bloggers Conference in Boulder November 5th - 7th.

The Big Foamy Head Book Club has a recommendation - "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett.

Music Samplings:

  • Bessie Smith - Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out
  • Bruce Springsteen - How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live

Show 149 - The Political Show

icon for podpress  Show 149 - The Politics Show [55:57m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download

It is not our nature to discuss politics, but its been getting too weird in Mempho. Dick and Mike go offsite (to Mike's house) to mull over the craziness that is southern politics. And to drink a couple of beers!

In Memoriam:

  • BrewDog Paradox Smokehouse
  • Sierra Nevada 30th Anniversary

It's not just the heat, its the humidity. Maybe that's why there are so many lunatics in Memphis Politics. We cover the lows (cause there ain't that many highs) and diverge into a few misstatements of facts about currently living craft brew icons (sorry I thought you were dead Fritz).

Music Samplings:

  • Is You A Viper - Alex Chilton
  • I Need A Little Sugar In My Bowl - Bessie Smith
