Show 68 - Ale Asylum Beer Show

Join us as we enjoy beers from Madtown's up-and-coming Brewery and Brew Pub - The Ale Asylum. Hint for the unlearned, Madtown is an alias for Madison, WI. Limited availability in bottles, but always available in growlers and pints from the pub. It's beer that's «fermented in sanity.»

Class and culture abound during this show. Well, class and culture as defined by the BigFoamyHead hosts!

Book readings? Yes! We read an excerpt from Charlie Papazians book «Microbrewed Adventures.»

Movie Information? Of course! We celebrate the opening of Black Snake Moan - «everything is hotter down south.» This movie was filmed in Memphis and set in Stanton, TN which is about 40 miles from the beer studio. You can hear the sounds of the cicada, frogs and crickets throughout the movie that is synonymous with the midsouth in the summer time.

Art? Indeed. We have a discussion on some of the folk art which is featured in the liver stretching exercise preshow video. We also talk about the art of brewing and beer competitions.

More class and culture? Of course! We delve in to Haiku, the ancient Japanese form of poetry. Rub your eyes and wake the kids!

The movie inspired us to dig out some of the older blues tracks... including one of the original versions of Black Snake Moan and a cover of Memphis Minnies «Tricks ain't walking.»

That's not enough you say? Okay, we're starting something new - promoting interesting blogs! This week we recommend Beer Haiku and The Opinionated Beer Page.

Still not enough? We have a great news segment with Rick Lyke.

Show 67 - Stout Beer Show

We had a huge selection of Stout beers waiting for us to imbibe. Stouts... dark roasty goodness. All were very dark, accoring to the style guidelines, but thats where the similarities ended. There is great diversity in the stout beer style - from the English session stouts to the «over the top» American stouts. Our samplings were in the «over the top» end of the spectrum.

On our preshow «liver stretching exercise video» we sampled a Dogfish Head World Wide Stout, courtesy of BuBBy, Supreme Dictator of the World, cohost of the Brain Gravy podcast and administrator for the TikiBarTV UserPlane site. Thanks BuBBy!

What? There is no video?!!! Opps! Okay, we had one of those infamous technical glitches... the video isn't available. We very much enjoyed the beer though.

Our neighbor Mike joins us. He jumped right in and did a great job - we're truly fortunate to have so many beer enthusiasts within walking distance to the studio!!

We have a great interview with the winner of the The Blues Foundation International Blues Challenge that was held here in Memphis on Beale Street, February 1-3rd. The first prize went to Sean Carney Band from the Columbus Blues Alliance. Sean also took the Albert King Award for best guitarist and was also the Best Dressed!!

We begin a discussion on Moving to Kegging that will be of great interest to homebrewers. It's a very technical topic, so a post was added to the site. Click the text above to read all about it. Video to follow!

Add some beer news from Rick Lyke, some really excellent music and you have a show! A stout beer show to be precise.

Beers we sampled this show...

  • Dogfish Head World Wide Stout
  • Old Dominion Brewing Co. Dominion Oak Barrel Stout
  • BrewBubba's Kentucky Breakfast Stout (22% ABV)
  • Lost Coast 8 Ball Stout
  • ReaperAle Mortality Stout
  • AleSmith Speedway Stout

Show 64 - Lost Abbey Show Redux, part 1

What? iTunes screwed up something? Impossible, you say? Well, it's true. We had part 1 and 2 of the Lost Abbey beer show in one post, but that apparently doesn't make nice with Apple. And since you've already had part 2 thrust upon you, here's part 1 posted afterward. Enjoy!

We lost the abbey but found the show, at least part 1 that you can download here.

Show 63 - Brew Crazy Beer Show

We welcome Johnny Max (BrewCrazy Brewcast) to the show and enjoy some of his award winning homebrews including the infamous Cause of Death. It's an all-grain 21% ABV beverage that they said «couldn't be done.» You read about it in Brew Your Own magazine, now hear how it was done straight from the brewer himself.

Add some beer news with Rick Lyke (http://lyke2drink.blogspot.com), an interview with the fine folks from O'Fallon Brewery, and of course - some great blues music with a twist of gospel and you have the recipe for a fun evening Big Foamy Head style!

Beers we sampled this show...

  • Cause of Death
  • Heffeweisen
  • Old Ale
  • St Arnolds Christmas Ale Clone
  • Poblano Chili

This show may not be your cause of death, but you won't know until you click here!

The video experiments continue. We try out Adobe Premiere Elements for some cool effects.

Show 59 - O' Fallon Beer Show

We kick off the new year with some fantastic beers from the O'Fallon Brewery of O'Fallon, Missouri. These guys create some wild flavors with great results. We sample six of their brews PLUS we reveal a stealth beer from one of the giant corporate brewers (hint: their initials are AB) and put it head to head against it's competitor to see who is the King of Stouts. On the news front, we debut our new snazzy intro and Rick Lyke from lyke2drink.blogspot.com brings us more news from AB, Flying Dog and the latest on the Iron City drama. We salute the passing of James Brown and give you lots of homebrew updates and info, while cooking up some Bambi at the same time. And we welcome a new little foamy head by the name of Olivia. Round it out with some great blues from Curtis Salgado and Duke Robilliard and you've got a show. Hard to believe we kept it under an hour!
