Show 68 - Ale Asylum Beer Show
Join us as we enjoy beers from Madtown's up-and-coming Brewery and Brew Pub - The Ale Asylum. Hint for the unlearned, Madtown is an alias for Madison, WI. Limited availability in bottles, but always available in growlers and pints from the pub. It's beer that's «fermented in sanity.»
Class and culture abound during this show. Well, class and culture as defined by the BigFoamyHead hosts!
Book readings? Yes! We read an excerpt from Charlie Papazians book «Microbrewed Adventures.»
Movie Information? Of course! We celebrate the opening of Black Snake Moan - «everything is hotter down south.» This movie was filmed in Memphis and set in Stanton, TN which is about 40 miles from the beer studio. You can hear the sounds of the cicada, frogs and crickets throughout the movie that is synonymous with the midsouth in the summer time.
Art? Indeed. We have a discussion on some of the folk art which is featured in the liver stretching exercise preshow video. We also talk about the art of brewing and beer competitions.
More class and culture? Of course! We delve in to Haiku, the ancient Japanese form of poetry. Rub your eyes and wake the kids!
The movie inspired us to dig out some of the older blues tracks... including one of the original versions of Black Snake Moan and a cover of Memphis Minnies «Tricks ain't walking.»
That's not enough you say? Okay, we're starting something new - promoting interesting blogs! This week we recommend Beer Haiku and The Opinionated Beer Page.
Still not enough? We have a great news segment with Rick Lyke.
Beers we sampled this show...

Join us as we enjoy some of our favorite beers, those offered by Bells Brewery, Inc. out of Comstock MI. Lots of strange current events to ponder from diaper wearing astronauts to the TRAGIC loss of Anna Nicole. We're joined by Rick Lyke, http://lyke2drink.blogspot.com, for some real beer news. Then we round out the evening with a fantastic interview with the main man himself - Larry Bell.
What? iTunes screwed up something? Impossible, you say? Well, it's true. We had part 1 and 2 of the Lost Abbey beer show in one post, but that apparently doesn't make nice with Apple. And since you've already had part 2 thrust upon you, here's part 1 posted afterward. Enjoy!
We welcome Johnny Max (
We drink beer, listen to music and chat a bunch. What else would you expect from the Big Foamy Head beer studio?
Paraphrasing Marsellus from the cult classic «Pulp Fiction» - We're gonna get medieval on you!
If you need proof that editing and drinking does not mix, this is it. We forgot to add the news to Show 60! So here is a special thrilling standalone issue of Beer News with Rick Lyke from
Great beer from Sprecher (and a really sucky one from the beer locker), blues from the Vaughn brothers, Robin Trower, Jimmy Thackery and more. We rant about sushi restaurants, give you the homebrew update with special guest Craig from Brew Bubbas and a good cause. More great beer news from Rick Lyke, and assorted odds and ends - and we manage to keep all our promises!
We kick off the new year with some fantastic beers from the O'Fallon Brewery of O'Fallon, Missouri. These guys create some wild flavors with great results. We sample six of their brews PLUS we reveal a stealth beer from one of the giant corporate brewers (hint: their initials are AB) and put it head to head against it's competitor to see who is the King of Stouts. On the news front, we debut our new snazzy intro and Rick Lyke from
